This challenge started out as something personal that I wanted to see if I could do. I have been playing around with things in the back yard for a few years now but I decided I really wanted to put things and myself to the test. So I started making plans and deciding what exactly I was going to do and how I was going to do it. Then I thought it would be fun to extend the challenge to everyone I could and see how many people would take the challenge with me. Are you game? Are you willing to see if you can do it? Read on.
So here is the challenge
Eat only what comes from your own yard or hobby farm for a period of 30 days with the exception of a very few things that most homes should have on hand as basic food storage items. These items would include the following: Wheat and or flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, salt, pepper along with other herbs and spices that you would normally find in a spice rack, and that’s it. The rules allow for freezing and other means of preserving food from the garden and yard as well along with anything needed to do the preserving. The challenge includes the use of animals as well. For example: livestock, poultry, rabbits, etc… but they must be kept and cared for by you.
I am doing this challenge in January of 2012 but you can do it whenever you want. We all know that it can take some time to prepare for something like this and no one expects you to be ready right away. However, you should take the challenge and then do it within twelve months of reading this. If you don’t put at some urgency to it then you may never actually do it.
By following my blog you will get ideas, how to articles, videos, recipes and more on how to turn an ordinary yard into a productive project that will bring you not only food but so much more, which we will talk about on the blog.
I want your ideas as well, so if you see me doing something on the blog and have an idea to improve on it then I want to hear from you. I also want to hear about your experiences while getting ready for your 30 day challenge and I definitely want to hear about your 30 days of eating right from your yard. Let’s all do it together. Whether you have an acre or more or your small back yard urban farm in a big city you can do it and we all want to hear about it.
I anticipate losing at least 20 lbs during this 30 day period and how can that be bad. I will not only be a lot trimmer but the health benefits of eating home grown food and getting rid of the preservatives, chemicals and other junk in my body will be a huge benefit as well.
So join in and take the challenge! Share your experience with all of the others around the country/world. Let’s do this!
